This book is written for an international audience concerned with the role of education in addressing the interconnected, complex problems of unsustainable development. It will be of particular interest to researchers and postgraduate students in education and related fields, as well as educators, policy makers and development practitioners seeking practical and research informed approaches to transforming education systems. Drawing on evidence from the TESF research network and its 67 collaborative projects in India, Rwanda, Somaliland/Somalia and South Africa, the book advances the argument that education can play a catalytic role in enabling more just and sustainable futures when it is grounded in locally situated knowledge, collaborative research practices and transformative approaches to learning. While rooted in Global South contexts, the insights developed here speak to wider international debates about how education systems can support socially and environmentally sustainable transformations.
Following the introduction, the book is organized into two interrelated parts. Chapters 2– 5 examine key domains in which education can contribute to more just and sustainable futures, drawing on empirical insights from across the 67 projects that formed part of the TESF Network. Chapters 6– 8 then reflect on the research practices and institutional conditions that enabled these insights to emerge, focusing on knowledge co- creation, power relations in global knowledge production and values- centred monitoring, evaluation and learning. The final chapter synthesizes these insights into a set of collective Calls to Action.
